Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut in the television screen as Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on Roseanne, an ABC sitcom Roseanne. Her parents, however, did not allow her to act until she was an adult, for fear of the effects stress would be able to have on their daughter. Perry was a shy teenager and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness led Perry back to California which was where theatre jobs were available. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. She performed with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on The ABC political thriller Scandal which starred her father. Also, she was cast on The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role through an audition.
